Nutritional Counseling

Nutritional Counseling

As naturopathic doctors, we believe that proper nutrition is essential to maximize health. What we put into our bodies has a direct effect on the way we feel. We are experts in nutritional counseling and always incorporate this into our treatment plans. We offer guidelines on general healthy eating habits, as well as specific dietary recommendations to address dysfunction. While it might be obvious that dietary changes can affect our digestion and bowel habits. Diet optimization is also crucial in treating hormone dysfunction, mood irregularities, energy levels, autoimmune disease, chronic pain, allergies, and so much more. One of the first things that we do as naturopathic doctors is remove obstacles to cure. Dietary factors are often a major obstacle that must be addressed.

When we ask you to make dietary changes we will also educate you on why we are doing so. Learning about healthy eating habits and food hygiene can be empowering, and enable you to take charge of your own healing journey. We recognize that change can be difficult. We work to consistently steer you towards better health, in steps that feel achievable. We find that proper support and education make a significant difference in success when attempting these kinds of lifestyle changes.

Physical Medicine

Physical Medicine

Physical medicine is a broad term that encompasses everything from chiropractic-style manipulations to gentle massage. While you might guess from the title, physical medicine can be great at addressing physical complaints, such as headaches and back pain. However, proper alignment of the body is also essential to our overall well being. We believe that hands-on medicine can give us great insight into a patient’s health – the body has its own story to tell, and can give us information that hasn’t been illuminated from talking to patients.

What Does Physical Medicine Treat?

We offer Cranialsacral Therapy, Visceral Manipulation, Active Isolated Stretching and Myofascial Release. These are all gentle types of physical medicine that can help treat gastrointestinal dysfunction, stress/anxiety, brain fog, post-concussive syndrome, headaches, physical pain, and much more.

What is Pelvic Floor Therapy?

We also offer Holistic Pelvic Floor Therapy, which is a type of internal massage that addresses urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction, pelvic pain, pelvic organ prolapse, back pain, coccyx pain, hemorrhoids, and constipation. Pelvic Floor Therapy is regularly prescribed in other countries following childbirth and can help foster a greater connection to self.

How Can Dr. Amy Haynes Help You?

Dr. Amy is highly skilled in a wide array of natural healthcare treatments. Some of the ones she is most passionate about are:

Ozone Therapy

Dr. Amy loves providing ozone therapy for her patients. It seems so simple, such an obvious treatment because it uses oxygen, an essential element to life! Ozone works beautifully—killing microbes and stimulating healing. Because it can’t be patented, it’s available to everyone. The applications of ozone therapy are endless—from treating bacterial infections to enhancing anti-aging. It can insufflate into an orifice, be injected into a joint or sinus, and be infused into the blood.

Chronic Pain is horrible. It alters the course of lives by limiting our decision-making abilities.  Like a thief, it steals our ability to feel pleasure in our lives. Patients come to us broken and in pain and, using prolotherapy, Dr. Amy enables their bodies to heal themselves. A month or so after treatment, they are better, without the use of drugs or surgery. Dr. Amy uses and loves prolotherapy as a means of treating chronic pain because it proves that our bodies are designed to heal.

As the name suggests, the O-Shot, or the orgasm shot, was created to enhance sexual pleasure in women. It has proven effective in decreasing pain, discomfort, and vaginal dryness, and increasing libido and, yes, orgasms! Another use for the O-Shot is treating incontinence or bladder leakage. Incontinence is a lonely and restrictive limitation with no good solution. Women stay home, limit their activities, and often avoid public situations altogether. The O-shot uses our own blood to treat this embarrassing condition. Dr. Amy finds this treatment, as opposed to mesh implants and surgery, to be elegant and sophisticated. There is something poetic about taking the cure from the patient’s own blood. and it works.

Botanical Medicine

Botanical Medicine

For every disease and disorder that we may encounter in our lifetimes, at least 10 biological plants were put on this planet to serve us. Plants are little chemical factories able to utilize the nutritional essence of rock, water and sunlight to make food and medicine for us. We individualize compound tinctures, powders, capsules and teas in our dispensary.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)

Platelet Rich Plasma is another form of Proliferative Therapy. The PRP process utilizes a person’s own blood to stimulate the body to repair ligament and tendon fibers, as well as bones and muscles. Healing components, extracted from the blood, are injected into an area of injury (joints, ligaments and tendons). Once injected, the solution  stimulates the body to initiate its own healing process.

Soft tissue injuries treated with PRP include:

  • Tendinopathy “torn or ripped tendons”
  • Tendinosis – tendons weakened
  • Acute and chronic muscle strain
  • Muscle Fibrosis – a type of injury cause by over training or extensive strain
  • Ligament sprains
  • Joint capsular laxity – the loosening of joints due to weakened muscles
  • Intra-articular cartilage problems
  • Mensical injury – a type of knee joint tear or sprain
  • Chronic synovitis or joint inflammation

Platelet Rich therapy is revolutionary new technique that has achieved dramatic results in difficult orthopedic situations.  PRP has been hailed in many publications as a remarkably effective healing process that works where other healing techniques fall short. It is being used more frequently in sports and injury-related healing with increasing effectiveness.

Dr. Raven grew up on the East Coast and move to Portland, OR to pursue her passions. While in Portland she studied Naturopathic Medicine, Herbal Medicine, Homeopathy, and Bodywork (Cranialsacral Therapy, Myofascial Release, Visceral Manipulation, Pelvic Floor Therapy, and Active Isolated Stretching). Dr. Raven’s partner is a Missoula native, so they recently relocated to the area to be closer to family. They enjoy a minimalistic lifestyle and live in a tiny house that they built themselves.

As a naturopathic doctor, Dr. Raven is trained to integrate physical, mental, and emotional aspects to understand an individual’s overall health. Each person has a story to tell and she wants to hear your story. Dr. Raven strives to create a judgement free space in the clinic and approaches healthcare from a trauma-informed, body-neutral, and gender-inclusive perspective.

What Does Dr. Stephanie Raven Believe?

Dr. Raven believes that the definition of health is to live our lives with freedom – to have the freedom to participate in activities that we want to do, and to enjoy all of the pleasures that life has to offer. She approaches healing with the mindset that there is always something that can be done. Her goal is to help every patient maximize their health and live as the best possible version of themselves.

Dr. Raven also believes that healthy community is critical to our wellbeing. Community has been de-emphasized in our current culture, which has been to our detriment. As a doctor, she feels that part of her role is to build community and to share knowledge with others in her community. One of her favorite naturopathic principles is docere, which is Latin for “instruct, teach, or point out”.

Dr. Raven believes that making simple lifestyle changes can have a dramatic effect on your overall health.
Dr. Raven believes that we all have the right to live life pain-free.
Dr. Raven believes that self-care and self-love are some of the most important things that we can do for our health.
Dr. Raven believes that many people suffer from burnout because our culture promotes over-working and has unhealthy expectations.
Dr. Raven believes that weight is not a reflection of health status.
Dr. Raven believes that living in harmony and connection with nature is essential.
Dr. Raven believes that only you can heal yourself. While she can share the knowledge to facilitate this process, each patient is ultimately
in charge of their own healing journey.

How Can Dr. Raven Help You?

Part of the beauty of naturopathic medicine is the diversity among practitioners. Some of the modalities that Dr. Raven is most passionate about include:

Physical Medicine

Dr. Raven incorporates bodywork into many of her treatment plans and is trained in Cranialsacral Therapy, Myofascial Release, Visceral Manipulation, and Active Isolated Stretching. Important information can be gained from slowing down and listening to the body. All of these therapies are useful in addressing stress/anxiety, brain fog, head injuries, headaches, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, physical pain and much more. Visceral manipulation is also especially useful for gastrointestinal complaints.

Pelvic Floor Therapy

Holistic Pelvic Floor Therapy is another type of bodywork that Dr. Raven performs, but it deserves a category of its own. Pelvic Floor Therapy is a type of internal massage that can be helpful in pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, postpartum recovery, urinary incontinence, constipation, hemorrhoids, back pain, coccygeal pain, and sexual dysfunction. Pelvic Floor Therapy is regularly prescribed in other countries following childbirth and can also help foster a greater connection to self.

Herbal Medicine

Dr. Raven has done extensive training in herbal medicine as a supplement to her naturopathic studies. Her training has been primarily focused on learning plants in the Pacific Northwest Bioregion because her previous home-base was Portland, OR. She believes in the importance of working with local plants and is excited to start learning the intricacies of plants that grow in Montana and the Rocky Mountain States. Working with local plants allows us the opportunity to develop more intimate relationships with the herbs we are taking medicinally.

Lyftogt Perineural Injection Treatment® (PIT)

This is a type of injection therapy that is extremely effective for treating chronic pain. This treatment consists of a series of small, superficial injections, targeting areas of nerve pain and inflammation. D5W (5% Dextrose), the substance injected during PIT, is immediately analgesic (i.e. pain-relieving), this effect typically lasts for 4-5 days post treatment. These injections also help decrease neurogenic inflammation and heal your nerves. Thus, after a series of 6-8 treatments, there is a significant and long-term reduction in pain.

Naturopathic Hydrotherapy

Naturopathic Hydrotherapy

As naturopathic physicians, we are trained in naturopathic hydrotherapy and have learned techniques to address specific health conditions. These treatments are often tailored to the individual patient to achieve the appropriate level of stimulation. While certain hydrotherapy treatments must be performed in the clinic, we also instruct patients on how to perform some hydrotherapy treatments at home.

What is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is a modality that uses water as treatment. Hydrotherapy has a rich history in medicine, with some of the first written treatments dating back to the 1600’s. Benedict Lust and Henry Lindlahr, known as the fathers of naturopathic medicine in the United States, expanded upon these early ideas to develop a system called naturopathic hydrotherapy. This system was further developed by other prominent naturopaths and remains a foundational treatment of naturopathic medicine today. “The working hypothesis of naturopathic hydrotherapy is that health, and therefore healing, is proportional to normal flow of healthy blood…the hydrotherapist seeks to improve the quality of blood in circulation” (Boyle & Saine, 1988). To achieve this, hot and/or cold applications can be applied to the patient to help direct circulation.

What Can Hydrotherapy Treat?

Examples of common illness that can be helped with hydrotherapy include sore throats, ear infections, headaches, common cold, influenza, pneumonia, bronchitis, strains and sprains, adrenal dysfunction and chronic fatigue. As you can see, hydrotherapy can treat a wide array of conditions. One specific in-office treatment that we offer, Constitutional Hydrotherapy, “enhances the immune response, improves overall nutrition, promotes detoxification and helps restore nervous equilibrium” (Boyle & Saine, 1988). When it comes down to it, hydrotherapy can help stimulate the healing response in all individuals!

Buteyko Breathing Method

Buteyko Breathing Method

Why do I have to learn how to breath?

The breath has been an inspiration in our development we began. Without proper respiration our cellular function would slow down, creating an imbalance in our bodies’ abilities to stay within metabolic normals. We are highly adaptable creatures and our respiration centers in our brains have adapted to the increasing levels of stress in our modern world, creating hyperventilation imbalances in our oxygen regulation.

Through normalizing our breath, we can reset our respiratory centers and improve oxygenation, athletic performance and emotional balance, as well as countless physical complaints including sleep apnea, asthma, allergies and anxiety.

In today’s stressful world, people often adopt chronic hyperventilation behavior, which occurs unconsciously, resulting in chronic health problems. The Buteyko method consists of breathing exercises specially designed to restore normal breathing patterns and greatly reduce asthma and other symptoms related to hyperventilation.

Buteyko Breathing Technique is a drug-free approach to achieving safe and effective control over asthma, hyperventilation and related conditions. The Buteyko method teaches you to control your symptoms through simple breathing exercise-without the use of drugs. As you practice and adapt these breathing exercises into your life, you will find your need for medication can be cut dramatically.
